Better Homes reveals contest winners
March 2007, Dubai:

Better Homes has announced the winners of its popular “Design a car” competition. The contest, which attracted over 2000 entries from 25 schools across Dubai, challenged students to create an appropriate design for the leading realtor’s fleet of branded cars.

Run to raise awareness of the multi-cultural meaning behind the range of designs on the existing Better Homes cars, the competition brought out the creative talents and artistic skills in many, making it a tough challenge to select the winners. Ryan Mahoney, Managing Director of Better Homes said, “The students excelled themselves with their entries, there were so many great designs to choose from it was very hard to narrow it down”

Students in three age categories ranging from 11-14 were asked to create a design that represents traditions and cultures from across the globe to reflect the diversity of Dubai, and they didn’t disappoint. With an array of interesting and unusual ideas submitted, the overall winners of Best Design were Jalwa Abdul Lathie’s “Customs” portraying Arabic faces, Ishita Mahesh Sampat’s “Rangoli” a delicate design inspired by henna and “Unity” a showcase of flags and people from around the world designed by Najam Fatema R Master.

Winning students each received AED 1000 worth of mall vouchers, had their design printed on a Better Homes Car and also take home a miniature Golf featuring their design. AED 10,000 worth of art equipment vouchers went to the winning school in each category courtesy of Better Homes and Emirates Trading with Saji Abraham of the latter commenting, “The competition encouraged young people of Dubai to use their artistic skills in an enjoyable way and we are proud to have been involved”

Presenting the winning schools and students with their prizes Mahoney added, “I am thrilled with the level of interest and involvement this competition generated. It’s a great opportunity to work with some really talented students and the winning designs look great on our cars”

The competition was particularly successful for staff and pupils of Westminster School with two students claiming top prize of Best Design in their age category and a fellow pupil receiving a runner-up placing. Speaking at the presentation, David Morrison, Principal at the school said “The students have all seen the Better Homes cars on the streets of Dubai and were really excited to have the chance to design one. It was a great opportunity to do something that was both fun and meaningful and for Westminster School to have so many winners is just fantastic”.
