Getting Connected To Wifi In Dubai

Don’t have wifi at home? If you’ve recently moved to Dubai and are trying to figure out how to get connected, look no further.

We have gathered all the information you need to get yourself connected in Dubai.

What Wifi Providers Are Available?

The UAE has two prominent telecommunications companies: Etisalat and Du. They offer a variety of internet packages as well as a home phone set-up, and a range of services, including international calls.

Often, choosing a provider comes down to deciding what your requirements are, and seeing what the best suitable offer available is at the time.

Note: In some buildings, the internet is only available with one provider. Therefore, make sure you check with your agent or the building management first.

How Do You Get Wifi In Dubai?

There are 3 main ways to get an internet package in Dubai:

  • Visit a Du or Etisalat store
  • Apply online via the Du or Etisalat website
  • Speak directly to a sales agent. Often, sales staff will offer a referral fee so your friends and family may be keen to put you in contact with someone.

What Documents Do I Need?

To set up your internet, you will need your original Emirates ID. If you do not have this, you will require the following:

  • Ejari-registered tenancy contract or title deed with name and physical address.
  • Passport including residence visa (original and copy)

You will also require a valid debit or credit card to make the payments, and typically you will need an email address and mobile number.

How Much Does It Cost?

A basic home internet package in Dubai costs upwards of AED 300 per month. However, your monthly price will depend on your provider, what requirements you have and what packages are available at the time of purchase.

Setting up fees range between 100 and 200 AED while shifting your connection to another location will cost you AED 150.

How Soon Will The Service Be Activated?

Regarding your internet connection, completing the paperwork and getting the connection set up can take up to 7 working days. So, its a good idea to submit the request and start the process at least a week before your move-in date.

Blocked Content On The Internet

In Dubai, all web pages route through Emirates Proxy, which means you will not have access to all sites. Any offensive or government-related websites will be blocked. Social platforms like WhatsApp, Facetime, Skype, Instagram and Snapchat are legalised, however, video and audio calling facilities have been blocked.

What About Mail Delivery?

The UAE doesn’t have a regular postal delivery service and instead uses PO Boxes. Register online for a private PO Box through Emirates Post (epg.gov.ae) and select from a number of options, including mail collection from your own box in the nearest post office, through to twice-weekly mail delivery to your home (villas in selected areas only). Or, have your post sent to your work PO Box. Suitable for letters and small packages at annual fees ranging from AED 300–995 (at the time of writing).
